Panasonic and Sony Blu-ray increase capacity to 67 GB


A layer increases to 33.4 GB of data in future. This represents an increase

signal processing.

to increase the maximum storage capacity of Blu-ray disc of 50 GB to 66.8 GB.

The higher capacity is achieved through a new technology for signal
processing. The so-called Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE-i)
improves the quality of read and write operations.


The solution is compatible with the existing laser optics Blu-ray player.
i-MLSE but needs a more powerful hardware, as the new process involves complex
calculations, which current players are overwhelmed. A possible candidate for
Blu-ray discs with more capacity is Sony’s PlayStation 3, the Cell processor
provides sufficient performance for i-MLSE.
